Since our last broadband survey in July the US and Canada have both dropped one position in broadband penetration worldwide. According to a recent Point Topic survey, the US dropped from 22nd place to 23rd place (from Q1 2011 to Q3 2011). Canada also dropped one position to 19th place since our last survey.

1.2 Billion Active Mobile Broadband Users – Europe Leads World in Broadband Penetration – December 2011 Bandwidth Report
By the end of 2011, there were over 1.2 billion active users of mobile broadband devices, according to a recent survey. 90% of the world’s population had access to 2G broadband, while 45% of the world had 3G coverage, according to the ITU. Europe leads the world in broadband penetration with fixed and mobile broadband penetration reaching 26% and 54% respectively. The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Denmark lead all countries surveyed in fixed broadband penetration.
US Broadband Penetration Drops to 27th Place Worldwide – July 2011 Bandwidth Report
In just over a year the US has dropped two places in worldwide broadband rankings. As measured by household usage, broadband penetration in the US dropped from 25th to 27th place worldwide. The US remained at 22nd place in broadband use by population. Qatar jumped two spots to lead Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in household penetration of broadband, while Iceland jumped 2 spots to 3rd place behind Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in broadband penetration by population.

Last month’s Bandwidth Report discussed wireless broadband penetration. This month we look at the spread of fixed broadband and Internet penetration, as well the performance cost of going wireless. Europe leads the world in fixed broadband and Internet penetration, just as it leads in mobile broadband peentration.
European Mobile Broadband Penetration Nearly Twice the Americas – February 2011 Bandwidth Report
Europe leads the world in mobile broadband penetration with nearly twice the subscribers per 100 inhabitants than that of The Americas and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The CIS leads all areas surveyed in mobile cellular subscriptions with over 130% penetration, according to a recent survey by the ITU.
Study: Americans Lead World in Broadband Use – US Broadband Penetration Jumps to 94.5% – December 2009 Bandwidth Report
North America and the US are the heaviest users of the Internet, surpassing Europe and Asia according to a recent study. Despite remaining in 15th place overall in broadband penetration (OECD 2009), the US leads the world in broadband users, and is essentially tied for second with France in overall usage, behind only South Korea. Among active Internet users, broadband penetration in US homes jumped to 94.45% in November 2009.
Bulgaria Leads Europe in Broadband Growth – October 2009 Bandwidth Report
Bulgaria leads the EU in broadband penetration growth with an annual growth rate of over 228%. The closest competitor, the Czech Republic is 40 percentage points behind at 181.8%. For overall uptake, Denmark and the Netherlands came in a virtual tie for the European broadband penetration crown at 37.1%. With its faster growth rate, the Netherlands is poised to pass Denmark to have the highest broadband penetration in Europe.
UK Broadband Penetration Drops to 14th Worldwide – US Broadband Penetration Falls to 93.1% Among Active Internet Users – April 2009 Bandwidth Report
The UK has dropped from 13th to 14th place in broadband penetration worldwide, during the last quarter of 2008. The US dropped out of the top 20 entirely during the same time period, according to a recent Point Topic survey. Meanwhile US broadband penetration dropped to 93.13% among active Internet users. This is the second month in a row that US broadband penetration has fallen.

President-elect Obama is calling for a massive $850 billion or more economic stimulus package to jump start the US economy and rebuild neglected infrastructure. As part of this plan the Obama administration has pledged to deploy next-generation broadband to every community in America. What the new administration has not offered is more specifics on their plan to achieve broadband for all. The Free Press has put forth a $44 billion plan to achieve universal broadband availability for the United States.

European Wi-Fi usage is growing more than twice as fast as the US. At current growth rates, Europe is poised to pass North America in wireless Internet usage (see Figure 1). Due to popular demand, the FCC has redefined the speed of broadband. Among active Internet users in the US, 88.4% now use broadband.
