Bulgaria Leads Europe in Broadband Growth – October 2009 Bandwidth Report

Bulgaria leads the EU in broadband penetration growth with an annual growth rate of over 228%. The closest competitor, the Czech Republic is 40 percentage points behind at 181.8%. For overall uptake, Denmark and the Netherlands came in a virtual tie for the European broadband penetration crown at 37.1%. With its faster growth rate, the Netherlands is poised to pass Denmark to have the highest broadband penetration in Europe.

Monaco Wins Broadband Jackpot – UK Broadband Penetration Drops to 17th Place Worldwide – Moldova Fastest Growing Broadband Country – September 2009 Bandwidth Report

Monaco had the highest global broadband penetration rate of 47.4 percent, trumping all other countries in a recent survey. The UK dropped from 14th place to 17th place in broadband penetration over the past two quarters, according to Point Topic. Moldova’s broadband subscribers grew by nearly 20% over the past quarter and by 100% over the past year. Meanwhile in the US, broadband penetration crept up to 93.5% among active Internet users.

US Broadband Speed 18th Worldwide – Delaware Broadband Fastest – US Broadband Penetration at 93.3% Among Active Internet Users – August 2009 Bandwidth Report

The US came in 18th among all countries surveyed in average connection speed, growing at about half the worldwide average increase over the past year. Within the US, Delaware had the fastest connection speed among the 50 states, averaging more than 7Mb per second. Washington and Georgia top the list in Internet penetration per capita, according to a recent survey by Akamai. Worldwide, South Korea continues to lead all countries in average connection speed at 11Mbps. Meanwhile, broadband penetration among active Internet users grew to 93.3% in July 2009.

Japanese Broadband Nears 50% Fiber – US Broadband Penetration Grows to 93.4% Among Active Internet Users – May 2009 Bandwidth Report

Japan has the highest percentage of fiber-optic subscribers to broadband in the world. Nearly 48% of broadband subscribers use fiber-optic connections in Japan, well above the OECD average of 10% worldwide. At its current growth rate, more than half of Japan’s broadband lines will be on fiber-optic networks by the summer of 2009. Meanwhile, US broadband penetration among active Internet users grew to 93.44% in April.

UK Broadband Penetration Drops to 14th Worldwide – US Broadband Penetration Falls to 93.1% Among Active Internet Users – April 2009 Bandwidth Report

The UK has dropped from 13th to 14th place in broadband penetration worldwide, during the last quarter of 2008. The US dropped out of the top 20 entirely during the same time period, according to a recent Point Topic survey. Meanwhile US broadband penetration dropped to 93.13% among active Internet users. This is the second month in a row that US broadband penetration has fallen.

Apple Streaming Media Players Target Microsoft – European Broadband Grows 20% to 110.5 Million Connections – US Broadband Growth Slows to 59% Penetration – March 2009 Bandwidth Report

The popularity of Apple’s streaming media players is rapidly approaching Microsoft’s. According to a recent survey of streaming media usage, the market share of Apple’s iTunes and QuickTime players grew from 32% in January 2008 to 36.4% in January 2009, while Microsoft’s Media Player was unchanged at 50.7%. Most of this gain was due to the increasing popularity of iTunes. Meanwhile broadband lines grew by 20% to 110.5 million lines in Europe over the past year. In the US, broadband growth slowed to its lowest level in seven years, while penetration crept up to 59% overall.

UK Broadband Penetration Breaks 95% – US Broadband Penetration Grows to 93.4% among Active Internet Users – February 2009 Bandwidth Report

The percentage of users on broadband in the UK rose to 95.1 percent in December 2008, according the to Office for National Statistics. More than 19 of 20 connections to the Internet are via broadband in the UK, according to a survey of Internet Service Providers. Due to the high penetration rate, the quarterly report has been discontinued. Meanwhile in the US, broadband penetration grew to 93.38 percent among active Internet users in January 2009.

Majority of Americans Wireless – US Broadband Penetration at 93% Among Active Internet Users – July 2009 Bandwidth Report

More than half of all Americans, some 56%, have accessed the Internet by wireless means. For laptop users, over 81% have connected to the Internet wirelessly, according to PEW Internet. By the end of 2010, Clearwire plans to extend WiMAX coverage to 120 million Americans across 80 markets, according to Akamai. Among active Internet users, nearly 93% connect to the Internet over a broadband connection. Note that our July 2009 broadband survey starts anew with a larger sample size from Nielsen.
