The District of Columbia had the fastest connection speeds among the United States, according to a recent survey. The US came in 17th worldwide in broadband penetration. The average US household, however, enjoys less than half the broadband speed of the average South Korean household.

Since our last broadband survey in July the US and Canada have both dropped one position in broadband penetration worldwide. According to a recent Point Topic survey, the US dropped from 22nd place to 23rd place (from Q1 2011 to Q3 2011). Canada also dropped one position to 19th place since our last survey.

In just over a year the US has dropped two places in worldwide broadband rankings. As measured by household usage, broadband penetration in the US dropped from 25th to 27th place worldwide. The US remained at 22nd place in broadband use by population. Qatar jumped two spots to lead Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in household penetration of broadband, while Iceland jumped 2 spots to 3rd place behind Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in broadband penetration by population.

The US dropped to 25th place worldwide in broadband penetration by household, according to a recent survey by Point Topic. From Q2 2009 to Q3 2009 US broadband penetration by household fell from 22nd place to 25th place. Meanwhile, broadband penetration in US homes inched up to 94.55% in December 2009.

The US came in 18th among all countries surveyed in average connection speed, growing at about half the worldwide average increase over the past year. Within the US, Delaware had the fastest connection speed among the 50 states, averaging more than 7Mb per second. Washington and Georgia top the list in Internet penetration per capita, according to a recent survey by Akamai. Worldwide, South Korea continues to lead all countries in average connection speed at 11Mbps. Meanwhile, broadband penetration among active Internet users grew to 93.3% in July 2009.

The UK has dropped from 13th to 14th place in broadband penetration worldwide, during the last quarter of 2008. The US dropped out of the top 20 entirely during the same time period, according to a recent Point Topic survey. Meanwhile US broadband penetration dropped to 93.13% among active Internet users. This is the second month in a row that US broadband penetration has fallen.

President-elect Obama is calling for a massive $850 billion or more economic stimulus package to jump start the US economy and rebuild neglected infrastructure. As part of this plan the Obama administration has pledged to deploy next-generation broadband to every community in America. What the new administration has not offered is more specifics on their plan to achieve broadband for all. The Free Press has put forth a $44 billion plan to achieve universal broadband availability for the United States.

Since the end of 2009, the US has improved its broadband speed rankings from 22nd to 16th worldwide. From Q4 2009 to Q2 2010, the average broadband speed in the US grew from 3.8Mbps to 4.6Mbps, according to an Akamai broadband survey. Delaware enjoys the fastest connections in the US, and California dominates the top US cities for fast broadband. If you want fast Internet connections, don’t go to Mayotte, Wallis and Futuna, or Cuba.

Over the past two quarters (Q1 2008 to Q2 2008) US broadband penetration among the general population dropped from 17th to 19th overall among all countries surveyed worldwide. As of the second quarter of 2008, Monaco leads all countries surveyed with 40.63% of the population on broadband and 100% of households (see Figures 1 & 2), according to Point Topic.
YouTube Dwarfs Top Video Sites – US Ranks 15th in Broadband Speed Worldwide – US Broadband Penetration Creeps to 90.8% among Active Internet Users – August 2008 Bandwidth Report
YouTube continues to dominate the top video sites tracked by Nielsen Online. Updating last year’s top 10 video site survey this year we find YouTube even further ahead of its nearest “competitor,” Google. As of July 2008, YouTube had more than 7.5 times more unique viewers than Google Video. Combined together, Google properties YouTube and Google Video have over 88 million unique viewers, and make up over 36% of the share of videos viewed on the Internet. A recent study by the Communications Workers of America revealed that the US ranks 15th worldwide in broadband speed. In other news, US broadband penetration crept up 0.27 percentage points to 90.76% in July 2008.
